17. Codes and Conventions

Mise-en-scene-

Thrillers are normally located in dark and gloomy places, in big cities or weird locations. This is to create suspense and tension as the audience don’t know what could happen. An example of this would be at the start of Bourne Supremacy, where it shows the woman running down the dark corridor. This fits in with the atmosphere perfectly because it makes the audience ask questions, and creates unease.  We will be using black and white imagery in our thriller to get the dark effect.
There needs to be props in a good thriller, this makes the audience feel a sense of danger, especially if there is a weapon or gun involved. The props can play into the scene very well, as they can change the whole mood and change the story line, depending on what the prop is and how it plays a role into the film, and an excellent example of this would be in Halloween II as he picks up various weapons to kill people with. In our thriller we will be using pills, we hope this will put the audience in fear as they don't know what the pills are and what danger they can cause.

The costumes in a thriller have to be dark, and mysterious. Our main character is wearing black trousers and a black coat and our villain is wearing a scientist costume to make it known to the audience he is a crazy unstable scientist.

Chases are good for a thriller, as they build up tension and add suspense. A good example for this would be the car chase in Bourne Supremacy. It will be made known to the audience that someone is after our main character and then we will use up beat temp music to recreate a chase.

construction-

There are a lot of shot types and shot angles used in an average thriller. The best shot to use is a close up. We will use this as it shows the characters emotions and what they are feeling, it also catches the attention of the audience, as it gets them involved within the film.
Over the shoulder shots are very useful too so we will use these as it can help the audience to pretty much see from the characters view, so it feels like they’re in the shoes of the character. It also makes the audience feel like the character is being followed, and this builds up suspense and tension as they feel the need for the character to turn around and it gets them involved, which obviously they don’t and they keep walking.
The best shot angle to use for a thriller is handheld. We will use This angle to make the audience feel like it is them in the film, it also builds up the suspense and again makes the audience feel like they are in their shoes.

We are going to use Dark orchestral sounds as it really gives a sense of danger, and it makes the audience feel like someone is in trouble. There needs to be fast cuts in action scenes, an example of this would be in the film Psycho, when the woman is being stabbed in the shower.

Narrative-

There can be many characters in the opening of a film, as long as it fits in with the scene and the background itself. The obvious characters are the killer and the victim. Our killer is the mad scientist and this character is obviously is moody, and doesn’t speak a lot and is normally very mysterious.
Whilst our victim is normally happy, until he gets chases down by the killer or gets found out. And our character was happy until he took some pills and his life changed forever.
